alone with everbody，无解的孤独

最初把耳朵借给Verve的时候，Britpop正横扫乐坛，并不是特别心甘情愿，无非是他们的主唱……实在太帅——忧郁的那种。

后来，我听到了《A Storm In Heaven》，开始懂得，The Verve并不是Britpop能够相比的，华丽与迷幻编织成的失控时空里，醍醐灌顶的满是焦灼不安，尤其是RichardAshcroft，我怀疑即使此人站在你身边，也犹如天外般遥远，The Verve穿飕着，思索着，冷冷地注视着我们存在的这个星球。

早期的Verve因与一间Jazz Label同名而改为:The Verve。92年出道时连同Suede并列为90年代英国音乐的新希望，更自称为是世界上最好的Jamming Band。从早期仿如漫天无际之太空声音的三张细碟到97年秋发表的《Urban Hymns》，之间记载的转变表明Verve已不在是当年对音乐充满热挚追求的幻想少年。在《Urban Hymns》中只是不厌其烦的重复《A Northern Soul》时期的吉他声响。使我惊艳的，只有《A Storm In Heaven》和接着发表的B-SIDES集《NO COME DOWN》。

《A Storm In Heaven》(天堂风暴)被喻为是90年代英国最重要100张专集之一。即使在现在仍有无可比拟摄人感染力。唱片中的那些作品里，都展现着那种美丽梦幻的空间和超现实的虚幻意境，来得新鲜而突破，也建立出乐队早期的太空迷幻风格。不要忘记当时The Verve并没有利用任何电子合成器来营造那些梦幻的太空感觉，一切都只是透过吉他的音响效果所塑造出来，实在令人难以置信这几位年青乐手竟有其如此优越的表达能力。或者The Verve的音乐就似是可以伸展至永无止境，而他们在LIVE中便试过将一首作品变成长达25分钟的Jamming，完全处于毫无限制当中。

另一方面，由Brian Cannon设计的唱片封面里所散发出来一种疏离的魔幻现实主义，从构图到光影都呈现出一份耐人寻味之感。但最重要的是，The Verve拥有Richard Ashcroft这位不可思疑的Front Person，正如Melody Maker的乐评人David Stubbs曾说：他的词藻乃是那么叫人难以置信。可见到深受文学与哲学所洗礼的他，在言谈之间都往往渗透着使人有思考余地的哲学理性与仿如寓言的意识。而在台上，Richard却是一位狂妄而完全进入游离恍惚状态的表演者。素来他们就像与那群Britpop乐队分别存在于两个不同的世界上，彼此互不相干之余，那些乐队在他们眼里也只不过是肤浅的东西而已。

有朋友说，任何优秀的乐队无疑都会有灵魂式的核心人物，从而注定优秀的乐队比较短命——因为没有人愿意永远当叶子。The Verve从1989年成立到1999年解散，期间只短暂更换过一个吉他手，似乎成员们对音乐共同的喜好（据说他们都是批头士的拥趸，而且都酷爱迷幻音乐）让他们走过了十年的风雨，关键是，关于Verve改为:The Verve中间耗费在法律官司上的时间用来作音乐多好——我总是这么想，但是无论如何，无法否认的是Richard Ashcroft太出色，以至于我们在现场和任何他们的音乐资料片中看到的80%左右的镜头都是他标志性的、诗人一样的忧郁的脸。乐队解散后，Richard Ashcroft去年在“维珍”旗下发行了个人首张专集alone with everbody，我没有听过，也许即使听了，也无法理解——从“天堂风暴”到现在的，Ashcroft的孤独。
