As Yogi Berra might say, it's getting late early for Team USA in the medal race against the Chinese.

This may be hard to tell from the NBC broadcast, which doesn't make Chinese medal ceremonies a priority, but the U.S. is falling dangerously behind in the gold-medal race—a race that's expected to go down to the wire.

While the deficit is only four, the problem for the U.S. is that it has lost golds that were supposed to be locks, especially Michael Phelps in the 200-meter butterfly and Rebecca Soni in the 100-meter breaststroke. The 4x100-meter men's freestyle relay was another chance for gold that became a silver.

Factor in China's unexpected golds from medley specialist Ye Shiwen, and that's a five-gold swing, a huge shift in a tight race. Surprisingly, the Chinese also keep sneaking onto the lower steps of the podium at the pool, with two silver and two bronze that might even allow them to keep the overall medal race interesting.

Serena Williams's decision to not play mixed doubles will probably cost the U.S. a gold, too.

A Wall Street Journal analysis before the Games projected 40 gold medals for the U.S. and 38 for China. There is still a way for the Americans to win the gold and overall medal races. But American runners are going to have to outperform U.S. swimmers for that to happen.

And by the way, let us know when the Russians begin to show up. For the hosts of the 2014 Games, this is beginning to look like Vancouver, where Russia finished No. 11 in golds.
