A fast train without freedom and democracy worth nothing.
Look in the US we can do whatever we want - own guns and shoot, do drugs, watch violence on TV, even people as dumb as Bush can be the president for two terms.

During the Shinkansen's 45-year, nearly 7 billion-passenger history, there have been no passenger fatalities due to derailments or collisions,[13] despite frequent earthquakes and typhoons. Injuries and a single fatality have been caused by doors closing on passengers or their belongings; attendants are employed at platforms to prevent such mishaps. There have, however, been suicides by passengers jumping both from and in front of moving trains
he only derailment of a Shinkansen train in passenger service occurred during the Chūetsu Earthquake on 23 October 2004. Eight of ten cars of the Toki No. 325 train on the Jōetsu Shinkansen derailed near Nagaoka Station in Nagaoka, Niigata. There were no casualties among the 154 passengers.[14] In the event of an earthquake, an earthquake detection system can bring the train to a stop very quickly. A new anti-derailment device was installed after detailed analysis of the derailment.
Throughout its 45 years of commercial train operations, the Tokaido Shinkansen has maintained a flawless record of no passenger fatalities or injuries due to train accidents such as derailment or collision.
While operating 341 ultra-high speed services a day that run at 270km/h, we have maintained reliability with an average delay of just 0.5 minutes, as well as a high level of safety.

worth noting that there has never been a fatality due to a train accident in Shinkansen since the beginning of its service in 1964. This remarkable safety record of the Shinkansen is chiefly attributable to its basic design concepts and the ingenious ideas underlying its operations. http://republicans.transportatio ... 19-07-Matsumoto.pdf
