People everywhere in the world have their own religions and superstitions. Though it is an age of Science and there are many atheists, I believe every individual has received impact from religions and superstitions in his life, which, of course, often comes from one's subconsciousness. For instance, in China whether one believes god or not, it is very sure that he will arrange his marriage in a dies faustus, rather than pick a day randomly.

It's easy to find superstitions relating to good luck. For example, in China, people like the numbers of 6 and 8, just because their Chinese pronounciation sounds like to say "good fortune", which reflects people's common wish to be wealthy. Another example is that a person believing in Buddhism often wears something around his wrist or neck and wish bless is with him. Moreover, as we know in Chinese luna calendar there are twelve animals standing for twelve consecutive years, and twelve years is a round. When people is in the year of their own animal the year is special for them, and they will often wear red underwear, which in Chinese explanation can bring to them good luck and help them to be far away from evils.

Superstitions concerning bad luck are just as common. People in China do not like the number of 4 as people in Europe and Amercian do not like the number 13, because in Chinese 4 is pronounced as to say "dead", which is not a good thing. Therefore, people will avoid the number 4 as possible as they can when picking a cell phone number, or a car license number, or some other stuffs concerning numbers. The number 4 always brings bad lucks, they think.

As to me, I am not very superstitious. However, I also have these concerns in my mind, as they exist widely among Chinese people and some of them even have become a part of our culture. It can not be simply judged as wrong to have such kind of concerns in our lives, as long as we do not take it too far. Those things that are worn or picked and expected to bring to people good luck and fortune, can be thought as one kind of incarnation of man's good will. Superstitions are just a part of life, whether or not you believe in them.
