In 1998 , Ayumi's debut single, "poker face", was released. Her grandmother died shortly before her debut single was released - it's now believed that, due in part to that, Ayumi strongly dislikes the song. The single debuted #22 on the Oricon charts and sold 43,000 copies, and started to gain more fame since then.

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.
